Date and Time in Europe

There are three time zones as shown in the digital clocks below. If you can't see the clocks you probably need a flash plug-in for your browser.

Western Europe Time (WET) = GMT

(GMT+1 in summer)
Ireland, United Kingdom, Portugal

Central Europe Time (CET) = GMT+1

(GMT+2 in summer)
Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Norway, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, The Netherlands.

Eastern Europe Time (EET) = GMT+2

(GMT+3 in summer)
Belarus, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Romania, Turkey, Ukraine.

GMT = Greenwich Mean Time

i.e. the time at the zero meridian, which runs through Greenwich in London, UK. For most practical purposes it is the same as Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).

European Summer Time

Also known as daylight saving time, the clocks go forward by one hour between these dates.

According to EU rules it starts on the last Sunday in March and finishes on the Last Sunday in October. The time changes at 1.00am ( 01:00) Greenwich Mean Time. (GMT)

Most European countries observe these rules, even those not in the EU.
